Frederick County Public Schools
Frederick County, Maryland
Beginning in 1995, Frederick County Public Schools implemented
Reading Recovery in six schools as an early intervention for first
graders who were in need of reading acquisition skills. New training
classes have been held each year since 1995. Teachers- in-training
learn how to carefully observe the literacy behaviors exhibited by
each child, how to respond and prompt to encourage strategic
behavior, and how to quickly accelerate each child to become an
independent reader and writer.
The Frederick County Site offers training services to Allegheny
County, Carroll County, and the Maryland School for the Deaf through
the skillful direction of teacher leader Barbara Shelley. Over the
last 14 years, 105 teachers have completed the yearlong training and
have provided Reading Recovery lessons to over 2,400 students. These
dedicated teachers work hard not only to deliver superb individual
lessons but also to collaborate with classroom teachers to ensure
each child's literacy needs are being met during and after Reading
Recovery lessons conclude. This careful analysis helped the site to
achieve a very favorable percentage (95%) of children who
successfully completed Reading Recovery in first grade and also
passed the Third Grade Maryland State Assessment.
Reading Recovery continues to be an early intervention service in
Frederick County due to the enormous support of Site Coordinator
Carla Zamerelli-Clifford as well as the local school board members.
We are fortunate to have dedicated staff and tremendous local
support to offer training and maintain ongoing professional
development for our teachers. Building administrators provide
tremendous support through their staffing choices and use of data.
Each and every year, parents show deep appreciation for the Reading
Recovery intervention provided to their children. One in particular
wrote, “All I need to say is thank God for Reading Recovery. Without
this program and a wonderful teacher who cared, Brooklyn would not
have come this far in such a short time." We are proud to offer this
wonderful way of learning to our early literacy learners.
